Hong Kong Secretary for Environment reveals business opportunities for Canada's green technologies

motum b2b attended a luncheon with Honorable Edward Yau, Hong Kong Secretary for Environment on April 27, 2009.

At the luncheon, Mr. Yau, described HKSAR Government's game plan for making their region an Asian and global environmental leader, paying special attention to the latest updates on the green Pearl River Delta initiatives.

Highlights of Mr. Yau's message:

  • HKSAR (Hong Kong and Guangdong Province) intend to pursue collaborative opportunities in the areas of clean energy, cleaner production, circular economy and clean air
  • Hong Kong has already, and will continue, to invest in initiatives that improve air quality, encourage clean production and enhance building energy efficiency, among other measures (CAD $34 billion are set aside for this)
  • Priority projects include: Hong Kong Harbour cleanup, sewage works, district cooling systems, integrated waste management facilities, green roofs
  • Hong Kong intends to invest significantly in the promotion and use of electric vehicles
  • Hong Kong, with its special economic relationship to China, is a gateway to similar market opportunities for green technology and environmental services in the Pearl River Delta area and beyond

Mr. Yau emphasized that Canadian companies with appropriate products, services and technologies should be pursuing markets in Hong Kong. Hong Kong's sourcing policy is to pursue best available practices and technologies from any and all regions. Canada has a favorable relationship with Hong Kong and is under-represented as a supplier of green technologies in this region.
